Not Your Average Banner

Every weekend, farmers with their colorful produce and displays transform ordinary city parks and town squares into a unique visual landscape. Vibrant farm banners are a huge part of the farmer's market landscape. Does your banner make a statement? Use these tips to be sure yours makes a splash!

Take One Woman Farm of PA, for example (right). The banner is elegant and easy to read, displaying their farm name, the CNG logo, and, below, what they sell: "produce, flowers, & eggs!" The writing is hand-drawn by the farmer, Margret Schlass, adding a personal flourish that can't be found anywhere else. The stripes of color harmonize with the CNG logo and her produce. Finally, consider the placement of your banner. If a tourist or a food bloggers snaps a photo of your display of rainbow chard, will the banner be in the background?

victory.jpgIf your farm has two tents, consider taking inspiration from Victory Farms (VA).  Use one banner for your farm name and logo, and the other for your farm's tagline. Choosing the same color for each is visually appealing, unifies your stands, and reinforces your visual identity. Try matching your business cards, produce signs, and banner to further boost your brand recognition!

While most market banners are oblong, you might consider frontfield.PNGthinking outside of the box with a square banner (or maybe even a pennant!) like  Front Field Farm (GA). Their hand-drawn logo includes their farm name and tagline, "working on a dream." The logo's shape fits naturally into the square banner. Choosing these dimensions has other benefits too - it doesn't overwhelm small tables and might be a nice addition to a CSA distribution table or outreach event.

Finally, consider the power of bold colors and a unique image. Big Lick Farm (OR), has a distinctive logo that really stands out. By placing it in the middle of their farm's name, they make sure they're noticed. The leafy, light green border adds energy without compromising the more informative and important elements of the banner. Finally, the banner could fit easily along the edge of the table or above the display depending on their market location.
